Do you know why I haven’t been writing lately? Because I haven’t even had time to look up “how to get baby to sleep, and keep them there!”.

I think we’re all losing our mind a little bit here now (just like the Cheshire cat said – we’re all mad!), it’s not teeth, he’s not hungry, he’s not in pain, it’s not his diaper… I thought colic was supposed to stop at 3 months. But this little guy will either start flipping out when he’s almost asleep, or his flipping-out fit will actually wake him up. We’ve monitored his day-time napping, tried to be consistent with times for dinner-bath-sleep… I guess I’m gonna have to adopt the – “as long as he’s not crying, I don’t care what he does” on this one…

Grandma is leaving this week, the holidays went by so fast!!! And now I am very nervous about getting on without her because, especially with the situation described above, on the mornings, when little mister sunshine is up and ready to rock and roll at 7 am – after I feed him – I will just hand him off to her, and then I sleep a sleep of the dead until she forces me awake because she needs to go to the bathroom/ eat something/ her back is about to give up/etc (I gotta give her props for pulling through until 11 and sometimes even 12!) And then I will wake up, and I will still feel dead! =( Zombie parents!

And the whole – sleep when baby sleeps – now he sleeps for 30-40 minutes at a time during the day. That’s barely enough time to feed myself!!! Unless we’re in the car – he can sleep for several hours in the car. But I can’t sleep and drive, so that doesn’t really work…

On recommendation from our doc, we’ve started solids. Rice cereal, and now prunes (I figured I’ll fix my worries of him being constipated from the rice cereal with the prunes.. =)). It seems like everyone in the household enjoys baby-feeding time. I look forward to it all day. It’s great fun. Though today he flipped over the bowl with the rice cereal, and got prune juice all over his head (not his face, his whole HEAD, I had to wash his hair after… there is probably still some left up his nose). Baby’s learning and that’s what matters!!

A self-reminder/preview for you guys of stuff that’s on my mind and maybe I will get around to writing about:

-we had our first Gymboree class today, so I gotta tell you about that

-Sophie the giraffe – what’s up with that? And are there other teethers I can get my son without him being a ghetto-baby?

And our last riddle for the evening: How can I schedule dinner, bath and bedtime all in one night if after dinner we have to wait at least 30 minutes before bath time, dinner after bath time makes no sense because we have to rebathe, daddy gets home at 6:30, but sometimes 7, and likes feeding baby, and baby should be put to bed between 7:30-8 to hopefully be asleep by 10… maybe 11… I think all the scientists pondering string theory need to take a break and tend to my dilemma! =)

P.S. I was going to share a picture of our “prune boogers” from this evening, but figuring out the instagram web interface is beyond me this evening. So, if you don’t want to wait for my son to grow up and figure it out for me, you can just follow me on instagram through here:

    Hi, Natasha!
I’ve been reading your blog for ever, but only now decided to say hi and introduce myself. I’ve got the same name as you, and my baby girl is 1 month younger than your little guy. congratulations! it’s tough… I admire you still being able to post here :) lol. I’m having same issues with short naps, it’s driving me crazy to be honest. we’re now taking like 5-6 30-min naps per day. how crazy is that! oh well, nice to meet you and hang in there, people say this should end soon as they progress.

Hi Natasha! Thanks for “coming out of the gloom”, I appreciate it!!! The short naps – I don’t mind – that’s not the problem, it’s trying to put him to bed at night, and him hollering for an hour or two like he’s a fat lady next in line at the donut shop, and the person in front of him just bought the last jelly-filled one.. :(

      • Natalia says:

sorry to hear that. when is his last nap before bedtime? he must be either overtired or undertired by the “bedtime”. ours doesnt stay awake for longer than 2.5-3 hours, but that’s really pushing it, so we figured that her last nap before 8pm bedtime should end by 6. then she plays for one hour, 7pm is bath, 7.30 is “dinner”, then diaper change at she is in bed at 8 usually sleeping right away (5 min either quiet or some “agh-u”). put her in bed 30 min later or ealier – she’ll be crying for half-hour :(

I’ve been trying to keep him awake after 5,but I guess that was making him overtired. But our grandma is still here..and if she had it her way – he would sleep all day,and I would feed him on a schedule in his sleep.. :) but we tried your way today, thanks so much for the advice!

Oh my… Sleep regression? Is he teething? Or it could be a “wonder week”…
Can’t wait to hear about your Gymboree class. We went to “My gym” yesterday and it was fun. She did great but got very tired/cranky/asleep after 20 mins… She especially loved the stretching excercises and looking at all the other babies.
We’ve got Sophie the giraffe as a gift and Alice only warmed up to her about 3 weeks ago. She loves touching it and talking to it, smiles when she sees Sophie and is trying to suck on its ears.
As far as teething toys, it’s too early for us to use (though she was born with 2 teeth!) but we’ve got these:

Of course so far she only tries to hold/suck them.
I’ve also heard of homeopathic teething tablets but I don’t know much about them… My French family swears by amber baby necklaces or bracelets, they even dug up an uncle who is a pediatrician and recommends them. Personally I wouldn’t put anything around my baby’s neck or wrist, but maybe an anklet?
I have read about using these as teethers by putting a breastmilk ice cube or frozen banana piece in there: http://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Pack-Fresh-Feeder-Colors/dp/B000GK5XY2/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1357666044&sr=1-1&keywords=baby+feeding

oh man, my little guy is taking at least an hour or more to get down also, its so frustrating, I have to rock him, give him his pacifier which he loses ten times, and fix his swaddle which he tries to hudini out of(he is not ready to unswaddle yet) So I completely FEEL your pain!!!

    • Natasha says:

We only swaddled our guy less than 10 times max.
I started paying more attention to his naps, and feeding him more frequently toward the evening.
Check out Natalia’s comment, today we tried her way, and it was miraculous! Let’s see if we can have a repeat!
